The

authorities of Peru

are investigating a woman who mutilated

her partner's

penis while he was sleeping in an attack of jealousy over an alleged infidelity, the regional prosecutor's office in charge of the case reported this Tuesday.

"We are awaiting the results of the investigations to determine the motive and circumstances of the events," the provincial prosecutor of the city of Chota, Darinka Lossio, told AFP. Lossio indicated that

the aggressor, identified as Marleni Rimarachin Colunche, 39 years old

, awaits the investigation in freedom and without coercive measures because she is a woman who must care for her three-month-old daughter.

The case was recorded over the weekend at

Colunche's marital home, in Chota, Cajamarca region (north of the country).

The victim had to be rushed to the

regional hospital of Chiclayo

, in the neighboring department of Lambayeque, due to the severity of his injuries. "He has a traumatic amputation, he has been given medical attention and will be given psychiatric support," he told AFP a medical source.

The woman allegedly argued with her partner, Iván Céspedes Sánchez, after the

man returned home drunk

. The attack occurred when Céspedes subsequently fell asleep.

It is estimated that the woman used a kitchen knife.

"We are outraged, we want justice. My nephew had his penis cut off," declared an uncle from Céspedes quoted by the local press. The couple has a three-month-old daughter.

The incident brought to mind the famous case of

Lorena Bobbitt

(now Lorena Gallo), the Ecuadorian victim of domestic violence who severed the sexual organ of her then husband John Wayne Bobbitt, on June 23, 1993 in the United States, a story widely followed by the tabloid press.
