While wine consumption has continued to decline over the past twenty years, non-alcoholic drinks are gaining ground. Witnesses to changing consumption patterns, they make it possible to gain new customers, believes Frédéric Chouquet-Stringer, founder of

Zenothèque

. Consultant and distributor of dealcoholized wines, this specialist nevertheless specifies: “

Legally, a wine without alcohol does not exist. Since December 2021, the name dealcoholized wine has been reserved for a wine whose alcohol level has been lowered below 0.5%. It is obtained either by the process based on filtration or by heating. Today, this market represents 1% of the wine market. But development is very dynamic.

If consumers are increasingly attracted by this type of product, it is also because of their quality, agrees Marie-Pierre Laller, winegrower in Bordeaux. Owner with her sister Emmanuelle and her husband, Éric Lallez, of

Vignobles Raguenot

, she admits to having taken time to think before launching. But his spirit of innovation won out. Its dealcoholized range called “Tip Top” was finally born in September 2023: “

All the richness of the wine is there and in a natural way. There are no additives, no sweeteners, no synthetic flavors, no synthetic tannins.

» The feedback is rather positive. The winemaker’s mischievous smile: “

I’m a bit of a revolutionary.

New markets in Africa

The de-alcoholized vintage from this producer is already sold in the Gulf countries. Canada and Switzerland are advocates. It also has clients in Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. Samuel Bonzo, its distributor in Abidjan, is won over: “

Our Muslim brothers are also fond of good wine. Except that alcoholic wine does not fall into the realm of religion. So, they asked a lot for non-alcoholic wines. Our customers are supermarkets, shops, cellars, but also restaurants.

The alcohol-free market is growing, particularly among young people. 44% of dealcoholized wine consumers are between 18 and 25 years old. France, Germany, Finland and the Netherlands are leading the demand. But also Norway and the United States, large consumers of low-alcohol wines. New concepts of alcohol-free bars are emerging in Europe and around the world from Liège to San Francisco via Dublin. According to Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris, the global market for alcohol-free products will exceed $11 billion in 2022.
