Virginie Girod SEASON 2023 - 2024 05:00, February 12, 2024

Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most famous nuns of the 19th century. Canonized, she even joined the very closed circle of doctors of the Church, theologians whose writings revolutionized Christian spirituality. In a new story in two parts, Virginie Girod tells you about the life of the Carmelite determined to become a saint

Thérèse was born in 1873 in Alençon, in Normandy. She is the last of a family of 5 girls. His parents, Louis and Zélie Martin, are two people inhabited by a deep faith. They even hesitated to take the religious habit before turning to watchmaking and lace respectively. Thérèse was not even 5 years old when her mother died of breast cancer. Louis Martin sells the family businesses and settles in Lisieux. Pauline, her sister and surrogate mother, soon returns to the Carmel, where the nuns are cut off from the world. For Thérèse, it's a new tragedy: the little girl is consumed by the fear of abandonment. When she fell ill, the Virgin Mary appeared to her in 1883. Thérèse recovered.

After Christmas 1886, “her night of conversion”, Thérèse decided to devote her life to God by joining Carmel, where two of her sisters were already located. The young girl is only 14 years old, so the canon and bishop of Bayeux asks her to be patient before making a decision with such serious consequences for her future. Thérèse then decides to ask… the Pope!
