The Indian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Qatar released 8 former Indian Navy officers after overturning the death sentences issued against them last year.

Last December, the Indian Foreign Ministry said that a Qatari court overturned the death sentence against 8 former Indian naval officers who were arrested last year, after they were accused of spying for Israel.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday, “We appreciate the decision of the Emir of the State of Qatar to allow the release of these citizens and their return to their homeland,” adding that 8 of the accused have returned to India.

The eight Indian citizens, who were working on a submarine project with a private company for the Qatari authorities, were arrested in 2022.
