The left was outraged on Sunday by the announcement, by Gérald Darmanin, of a constitutional revision to remove the right of soil in Mayotte, the PS already announcing that it would oppose it. The Minister of the Interior announced on Sunday in Mayotte a constitutional revision intended to abolish land law on the Indian Ocean island, which is facing a serious migration crisis and an explosive social and security situation. The PS will oppose this revision of the constitution, announced the head of the deputies Boris Vallaud on France 3.

“Will the constitutional revision of land law change anything in the situation in Mayotte?” he asked. "I don't believe it, that's why I am not in favor of revising the land law in Mayotte, which is already under the influence of a legal regime which is much more severe for obtaining French nationality than all the rest of France", he underlined. “The land rights are not negotiable. It is already adapted to Mayotte, and it has not been demonstrated that this has changed anything,” he insisted.

“I am not saying that there are no difficulties in Mayotte, I am saying that the way the government is handling them is a bad way of doing things,” he added, stressing that despite “already two operations gendarmerie" on the island, and "announcements", "public services are incredibly dysfunctional".

The environmentalist deputy Aurélien Taché also denounced the measure on BFMTV: "When we break like that with land law, which has been attached to French republican history for more than two centuries, it is because we consider that the "nationality is no longer attached to the place where you are born but to the origin or nationality of your parents. This is extremely serious." According to him, "if this provision goes through to the end and if Marine Le Pen then comes to power, it will be the end of land law in France."
