German Chief of Staff Carsten Breuer said that his country must be prepared for war within 5 years.

In an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Breuer pointed out that preparing for war is a phased process.

"We don't have infinite time, because for the first time since the end of the Cold War a potential war is being imposed on us from the outside," Breuer said.

He added, "When I follow analysts and see the possibility of a military threat from Russia, this means for us a preparation time of 5 to 8 years."

In response to a question about the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin expanding the war beyond Ukraine, the German army commander said, “Intentions first and foremost. I see that in what Putin writes and says, and in his actions in Ukraine.”

The German Army Commander continued, "This includes military capabilities. We have seen that Russia has turned to a war economy with the decision of the Duma, and now the possibility is increasing."

It is worth noting that after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Germany decided to increase defense spending and established a special fund worth 100 billion euros (one billion and 78 million dollars) to purchase advanced weapons systems and modernize its armed forces.

The German government signed a number of arms purchase contracts, the most important of which was the purchase of F-35 fighters, American Chinook transport helicopters, and an Israeli-made Arrow 3 missile defense system.
