  • Politics Junts tells the PSOE that the "total amnesty" is a red line after the setback in the Supreme Court

  • Congreso Junts affirms before the Venice Commission that its objective is a "comprehensive and immediate" amnesty

The Popular Party will force Congress on

February 20

, two days after the Galicians vote at the polls, to rule on the convenience of keeping the proposed Amnesty Law in place or demand that the Government desist from its claim to erase the crimes committed under the umbrella of the fight for the independence of Catalonia.

The

Popular Party

will defend a motion, to which

EL MUNDO

has had access , in which they urge the Chamber to demand that the Government "desist from its intention to amnesty those who committed crimes and other infractions within the framework of the so-called

process

."

The PP wants to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the stagnation in the negotiations between the PSOE and the Executive, on the one hand, and

Puigdemont

and Junts, on the other, on behalf of the criminal figures who would not be covered by the measure of grace, to do a call in favor of plugging what they consider "a true black hole in the future of our recent constitutional history."

The party led by

Feijóo

considers that the Government "instead of being at the forefront of the defense of the constitutional order, has not hesitated to successively satisfy all the requests that the independentists have demanded, in order to maintain the parliamentary support that sustains." And in this sense, they argue, he granted pardon to those who had been convicted by the Supreme Court for the commission of serious crimes, including sedition.

Next, they recall, the Government and its parliamentary partners repealed the crime of sedition and "modified" the crime of embezzlement to exonerate or reduce criminal responsibility to those convicted and prosecuted, including those who are in absentia.

And now, they add in the text that they will submit to the vote of Congress, "in order to circumvent the action of Justice, the granting of an amnesty is intended for those who would be the beneficiaries of it."

For the PP, the path that the Government and a fugitive from Justice are "traveling together" is "marked with unfortunate milestones" and "follows the roadmap that Puigdemont sets, improvising it at every step." On this path they emphasize the accusations of

lawfare

against judges; the attempt to limit the question referred for a preliminary ruling before the

Court of Justice of the EU

; the division of terrorism into categories and the possibility of modifying the

Criminal Procedure Law

to limit ongoing investigations.

For the PP, the amnesty that

Sánchez

intends to grant would mean "handcuffing Justice" and that is why, in addition to demanding that the Government desist from applying it, it urges Congress to reject the pressure campaign against judges, magistrates and prosecutors and demand that the

Prosecutor General of the State

strict compliance with its obligations in defense of legality, the rights of citizens, the public interest and the independence of the courts and, in addition, reclassify the conduct that was decriminalized by the repeal of the crime of sedition and recover the wording prior to the 2022 modification of embezzlement.
