US President Joe Biden discussed with German Chancellor Olaf Schulz yesterday, Friday, ways to achieve lasting peace between Palestine and Israel and a two-state solution in the future. They stressed the need to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip and increase life-saving humanitarian aid.

The White House said in a statement that Biden and the German Chancellor discussed - during Schulz's visit to Washington - efforts aimed at preventing regional escalation in the Middle East.

He added that Biden and Shultz reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's right to "self-defense" in accordance with international law, according to the statement.

Schulz assured Biden that achieving peace in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution, and they also exchanged views on determining the conditions for achieving a lasting peace that includes the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The German Chancellor called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week to remove obstacles to aid reaching Gaza, and assured him that the two-state solution must include Gaza and the West Bank, with the Palestinian Authority playing a central role.

Both the United States and Germany affirmed their support for what they called “Israel’s right to self-defense” and supplying it with weapons following the Al-Aqsa flood on October 7th, but the two countries recently began proposing the “two-state solution” as a solution that guarantees peace, despite the Israeli rejection of the proposal.

It is noteworthy that Tel Aviv's ambassador to Berlin, Ron Prosor, described Germany last December as Israel's best ally in Europe, and that it had become Israel's second strategic partner after the United States.
