During the interview, Putin did not rule out the possibility of Gershkovich’s release based on agreements between Russian and American intelligence services.

“We are pleased to see Russia’s willingness to reach a deal that will bring Evan home, and we hope that this will lead to his speedy release...” the WSJ said.

Putin also said that there are certain conditions that are being discussed through partner channels between the intelligence services.

Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg on March 30, 2023 for espionage.

Last December, the head of the State Department press service, Matthew Miller, said that the United States would continue to discuss issues with Russia regarding the exchange of Evan Gershkovich and the convicted Paul Whelan.

The director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, confirmed that Moscow and Washington are negotiating the return of Americans to their homeland.
