Plumes of smoke rise in the suburbs of Damascus after a previous Israeli raid (French-Archive)

Official media reported that Syrian air defenses shot down - today, Friday - two drones west of the capital, Damascus, and quoted a military source as saying that the two drones were coming from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, west of the capital.

It previously indicated that air defenses responded to “hostile targets” in the vicinity of Damascus, while the Israeli army said that it does not comment on foreign media reports.

Social media accounts close to the Syrian regime reported that Israel carried out air strikes targeting Mezzeh Airport and the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in Damascus.

It was reported that Israeli warplanes targeted Mezzeh Airport and a house in the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in the capital’s countryside at around 14:30 local time (17:30 GMT).

The Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in the Damascus countryside includes armed groups supported by Iran.

It is noteworthy that over the past years, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, targeting mainly Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah targets, including warehouses and shipments of weapons and ammunition, as well as Syrian army sites.

But these strikes intensified after the outbreak of war on the Gaza Strip after the “Al-Aqsa Flood” attack on the seventh of last October.

Israel rarely confirms the implementation of these strikes, but it reiterates that it will confront what it describes as efforts by Iran to consolidate its military presence in Syria and the region.
