The Ethiopian Parliament approved on Thursday the appointment of Ethiopian Intelligence and National Security Chief Temesgen Tiruneh as Deputy Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Parliament also approved the nomination of Tai Atseki Selassie - a former ambassador to the United Nations - to assume the position of Foreign Minister, succeeding the current Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen, who has held office since 2020, and was dismissed from the position of Vice Chairman of the ruling Abiy (Prosperity) Party late last month.

Tiruneh - who led the coordination of the government's response to the conflict that broke out last year in the Amhara region - was elected in late January to succeed Makonene as vice president of the ruling Prosperity Party.

Among the new appointments, Abiy Ahmed’s office announced on the “X” platform that National Security Advisor Radwan Hussein will assume the position of head of the National Security and Intelligence Service, succeeding Temesgen.

Abiy Ahmed has been leading the country since 2018, and was sworn in as Prime Minister of Ethiopia in 2021 for a new term of 5 years.
