  • Events They order to reopen the case of the Jimmy case, the Dépor ultra who was thrown into Manzanares in a fight with the Atlético Front

The Provincial Court of Madrid has modified the sentence imposed on a group of ultras from the Atlético Front involved in a violent fight on November 30, 2014 on the banks of the Manzanares that resulted in the tragic death of Francisco Javier Romero, known as 'Jimmy' , fan of Deportivo de La Coruña.

The events, which triggered widespread media and judicial repercussion, resulted in the initial conviction of

75 of the 82 defendants for the crime of injuries in a riot

. Of this group, two were given an additional penalty for attacking and injuring a National Police agent.

In a recent review, the Court has partially addressed the appeals presented by six of those convicted and LaLiga, agreeing to reduce

the fines from 1,350 to 750 euros

for this small group, recognizing an error in the calculation of the original penalty.

This decision is based on the consideration of highly qualified mitigating circumstances due to undue delays and confession of those involved, adjusting the sentence to a five-month fine, with a daily fee of five euros. The prosecution, led by the National Professional Football League, had requested prison sentences of up to three and a half years and significant fines, reflecting the seriousness of the events and the use of prohibited weapons during the confrontation.

New clues about Jimmy's death

At the same time, in a recent twist, the Provincial Court of Madrid ordered in October 2023 the reopening of the investigation into the death of 'Jimmy'. This decision, which reverses the previous closure of the case by the investigating court number 20 of Madrid due to

lack of conclusive evidence.

Previously, the police attempted to reopen the process in 2021, arguing that new evidence had emerged after the ex-girlfriend of a member of the Atlético Front pointed out her ex-partner (whom she had denounced for gender violence) and her entourage of ultra friends. However, the magistrate assured that the new witness was "neither reliable nor credible" and the case remained closed.
