In the Democratic Republic of Congo (

DRC

), President Félix Tshisekedi appointed his informant to the National Assembly. This is Augustin Kabuya, leader of the presidential party, a party that came first in the legislative elections according to provisional results of the elections organized the week of December 20, 2023.

Augustin Kabuya has 30 days, renewable once, to carry out his consultations. Objective: formally identify a majority coalition in the Assembly with a view to forming the new government. A work that the person concerned has already been carrying out behind the scenes since the election results.

“

Politically speaking, I am the natural informant of the head of state as the number 1 official of the party. This is why I was obliged to do this work even before my appointment

,” he declared to the media on February 7, just after his appointment.

This informant position logically goes to the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), the first political party in the new Parliament, and therefore to its leader, Augustin Kabuya, loyal among the followers of the head of state.

An activist during the time of Etienne Tshisekedi, this former close friend of Jean-Marc Kabund, remained alongside Félix Tshisekedi at the time of the break between the two men. “

It’s the reward for loyalty

,” confides an observer of Congolese political life.

Despite a very comfortable majority for the ruling coalition, the Sacred Union of the Nation, which occupies more than 400 of the 500 seats in this National Assembly, the task will not be so easy for Augustin Kabuya.

This time, its real role will not be to find allies: they are already there, but to clarify the balance of power which will lead to the composition of the next government. This is not easy, because there are a lot of expectations while we are talking about a tighter government (less than 40 positions).

As a reminder, the Sacred Union in Parliament is more than 400 elected officials, 40 political groups, with two major forces: the UDPS and its mosaic with 140 seats and the new PCR of Vital Kamerhe (around 100 deputies). “

We will have to manage ambitions and they are numerous

,” recalls political scientist Christian Moleka.
