Khalil Al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas in Gaza, headed the movement’s delegation to Cairo (Al-Jazeera)

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced - today, Thursday - that a delegation from it arrived in the Egyptian capital “to complete talks related to a ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.

She said in a statement, "This Thursday morning, a delegation headed by Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas in Gaza, arrived in Cairo to complete talks related to the ceasefire."

Yesterday, the Hamas movement responded to a proposed plan for a prisoner exchange and calm in the Gaza Strip, adding a detailed annex to it to implement its stages and stipulating that it be part of the plan.

The sources said that Hamas's response to the Paris Framework proposal - which was presented to it last week - included a plan of 3 stages, each lasting 45 days, during which military operations on both sides would be completely halted and prisoners and bodies would be exchanged.

Experts and analysts believe that Hamas provided an “intelligent response” to the ceasefire proposal, and that the ball is now in the court of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was counting on the resistance’s rejection of any agreement so that he could move forward with continuing his war.

For his part, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken considered - yesterday - that there is still “place for an agreement” between Israel and Hamas, after strongly worded statements made by the Israeli Prime Minister, to which Blinken commented, saying that Tel Aviv “does not have a license to strip others of their humanity.” ".

On January 28, a meeting was held in the French capital with the participation of Israel, the United States, Egypt and Qatar, to discuss a prisoner exchange deal and stop the war in Gaza, which will take place in three stages, according to Palestinian and American sources.

Tel Aviv estimates that there are about 136 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, while it holds at least 8,800 Palestinians in its prisons, according to official sources from both parties, but there is no confirmation of the final numbers from both parties.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war with American support on Gaza that, as of yesterday, has left more than 27,000 martyrs and more than 67,000 wounded, most of them children and women, according to the Palestinian authorities, and has also caused “massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.” According to the United Nations.
