In the newly flared debate about coalition options after the next federal election, FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai preferred an alliance with the Union or a so-called Germany coalition including the SPD. Djir-Sarai emphasized liberal beliefs such as sound financial policy, compliance with the debt brake and economic growth through investments, reductions in bureaucracy and tax relief. “However, they are difficult to implement in the government coalition due to the fundamentally different perspective, particularly of the Greens,” stated the FDP General Secretary.

"The overlap in content with the Union is much greater and I think that a black-yellow coalition could better get our country back on track economically after the next federal election," said Djir-Sarai to the dpa news agency. He also considers a German coalition to be conceivable.

According to current surveys, an alliance between the Union and the FDP would be far from a majority. But it could be enough for a coalition of the Union, SPD and FDP. Election surveys are generally always subject to uncertainty. Basically, they only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not predictions of the election outcome. The next federal election is planned for autumn 2025.

A debate had previously arisen in the Union about possible alliances after the election. CDU leader Merz did not want to rule out a coalition with the Greens. This met with headwinds in our own camp.
