Downed by the Mediator, the Servier laboratory plunges back into the red
The pharmaceutical group Servier, the 2nd French laboratory, went back into the red for the 2022/2023 financial year, a loss mainly linked to its conviction by the Court of Appeal on December 20, 2023 on the Mediator case. However, the laboratory says it is “confident” for the future.

The number 2 French laboratory is in the red. This is the price to pay for having been at the origin of one of the biggest public health scandals in
France
. In December,
the Servier laboratory was fined
9 million euros and must above all reimburse social security and mutual insurance companies more than 415 million euros.
The group was found guilty, among other things, of fraud, homicide and involuntary injury for having marketed Mediator, an anti-diabetic used as an appetite suppressant and the cause of 1,000 to 2,000 deaths. This Wednesday, February 7, Servier confirmed that this conviction weighed down its results. The loss linked to the affair amounts to 450 million euros.
However, this result has not undermined the group's confidence in the future, as its turnover increased by 9% last year. It was notably driven “
by the growth in the volume of sales of medicines
” (original and generic) across the world to the tune of 11.4%, despite an unfavorable impact of exchange rates, indicates Servier, which was able to align its price on inflation “
in certain countries
”. At the top, Daflon, prescribed to fight against venous insufficiency.
The laboratory is also gaining momentum in oncology and the treatment of the most difficult to treat cancers. The laboratory, which targets cancers such as digestive, pediatric, blood and brain tumors, has further accelerated in this field, the share of which now represents 20.2% of turnover, compared to 17.4% during the 'Previous exercice. Thus, “
from next year, we will return to the green
”, promised the director of the group.
