Schoolchildren and college students in France will participate this Tuesday in Safer Internet Day, an “annual event to raise awareness of digital uses” launched by the European Commission. This year, this program wants to challenge young people about their responsibility online.

For schoolchildren and college students throughout France, this Tuesday, February 6 will be dedicated to the international day for a safer Internet, better known as "Safer Internet Day". Throughout the day, then throughout the months of February and March, the young people concerned will participate in "a national digital awareness program", launched by the European Commission in 2004.

The Ministry of National Education specifies that it is an "annual meeting for young people, families and the educational community", the objective of which is "to encourage responsible and positive behavior online". It is included in the school calendar as “one of the highlights of the pHARe program”, which fights against school bullying and which is compulsory in all middle and elementary schools since the start of the 2022 school year.

Three resolutions to better control Internet use

This year is the 21st edition of Safer Internet Day, which is also organized in more than 150 countries. “Connected, engaged... and you?” is the theme. This 21st edition “challenges everyone about their responsibility online and calls for them to make commitments for themselves, their community and the planet,” explains the Ministry of Education.

Young people are asked to choose one of the three resolutions that will be proposed to them and to apply it on social networks. This ranges from mastering algorithms (not getting caught up in screens) to becoming aware of the ecological impact of digital technology, including reporting any cases of cyberharassment and hate speech.
