Today, Tuesday, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Guler met with Iraqi officials in Baghdad during an official visit, accompanied by Chief of Staff Metin Gorak.

The Ministry of Defense stated - in a statement - that Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid received Minister Guler first, before Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani met him.

Guler then went on to meet his Iraqi counterpart, Thabet Muhammad al-Abbasi, where he was received with a military ceremony. The two ministers held bilateral and joint meetings between delegations. Guler also met with the Iraqi Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir al-Shammari.

During the meetings, the two parties exchanged views on bilateral defense and security issues between the two countries and regional issues.

In the middle of last month, the Turkish Air Force carried out new air strikes on Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq and northern Syria, as part of a response to the killing of 9 Turkish soldiers in a PKK attack.

The fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is active in Syria and Iraq, is one of the most prominent issues preoccupying Ankara.

The Turkish army carries out operations from time to time against the Workers' Party, which Ankara has classified as a "terrorist organization" since it launched a rebellion against Ankara in 1984.
