Eight giant technology companies, including Microsoft, signed a charter yesterday, Monday, to “build more ethical artificial intelligence” and in line with human rights requirements.

This came during a global forum organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Slovenia.

A statement by the organization quoted its Director General, Audrey Azoulay, as saying that it is “a new big step”, after more than 50 countries adopted in November 2021 the first global rules on artificial intelligence, which is “obtaining the same concrete commitment from major companies.”

She stressed that this alliance is “necessary to develop artificial intelligence that serves the public good.”

In addition to Microsoft, the charter was signed by the LGA i Research Center of the South Korean giant LG Group, the Chinese Lenovo Group, the bank card company MasterCard, the American software group Salesforce, and the Spanish Telecommunications Company. "Telefonica".

Through this document, the signatories pledged to “fully carry out their role in protecting human rights, in the design, development, purchase, sale and use of artificial intelligence.”

The Charter practically obligates companies to establish “verification procedures” to assess risks and correct “the negative effects of artificial intelligence within a reasonable period of time.”

The agreement was signed at the Kran Congress Center near the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, where the second UNESCO Global Forum on this topic is being held.

This comes a few days after European Union member states approved - last Friday - unprecedented legislation at the global level to regulate artificial intelligence after intense negotiations on the balance between freedom of invention and maintaining security.
