Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera has died in a helicopter accident. The 74-year-old's office confirmed this on Tuesday.

As the Chilean daily newspaper "La Tercera" and the Argentine newspaper "La Nación" initially reported, citing government circles, Piñera was behind the wheel when the crash occurred in the south of the country. In addition to the politician, there are said to have been three other people in the plane. They are said to have been rescued alive by rescue workers after the accident.

The conservative Sebastián Piñera was Chilean president twice. During his first term in office from 2010 to 2014, Chile experienced strong economic growth, while Piñera's second term in office from 2018 to 2022 was marked by mass protests against his government and calls for his resignation.
