Military sources reported to Al Jazeera that military intelligence in the Omdurman Military Region arrested last Saturday three Sudanese army officers - one of whom was a lieutenant colonel and the other two were majors - who planned to assassinate a senior military commander, while the number of people displaced by the fighting rose to 11 million.

The sources said that the detainees were planning to arrest Lieutenant General Yasser Al-Atta, a member of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan and supervisor of military operations in Omdurman.

The sources added that Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Army, came to the Wadi Sayyidna military region in Omdurman to contain the crisis.

Humanitarian crisis

In a parallel context, the Sudanese government announced that the number of displaced people in 9 states reached more than 11 million displaced people in 67 localities.

Minister of Culture and Information, Graham Abdel Qader, said in a press statement that the most affected displaced persons - according to a study presented by the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner to the meeting of the Supreme Committee for Humanitarian Emergencies - are women and children, as the number of displaced women reached 4 million, while the number of displaced children reached 3 million.

The Sudanese official added that 90% of the displaced are from Khartoum State, Al-Jazira State and the Darfur Region.

It is noteworthy that the United Nations estimated the number of displaced people due to the war in Sudan at 7 million and 400 thousand displaced people.

In a related context, the General Coordinator for Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps said that the critical humanitarian situation in the displaced camps in the Darfur region rises to the level of a humanitarian catastrophe.

She added that the residents of these camps are in dire need of emergency humanitarian aid, including food, life-saving medicines, drinking water and shelter.
