More than 112 people have died in the violent forest fires in Chile so far. Hundreds of people are still missing.

The fires are also threatening the outskirts of Viña del Mar near Valparaíso. The two coastal towns are particularly popular with tourists. Around 1.8 million people live here.

President Gabriel Boric spoke of the worst tragedy the country has experienced since the severe earthquake in 2010. The authorities registered around 190 fires across an area of ​​29,000 hectares. The military should now support the firefighters. An evening curfew applies to severely affected areas.
