A 22-year-old Frenchman threatened several people in the street in Draveil, Essonne, on Sunday morning with an opinel. He reportedly suffers from psychological problems and converted to Islam a month ago. The man was taken into custody and the investigation continues.

Weak spirit, very recently converted and equipped with a bladed weapon... An explosive cocktail facilitating a headlong flight and which has every chance of passing under the radar of the authorities at the time of the act.

While he was threatening passers-by in the street, the police managed to arrest him thanks to a witness who had the presence of mind to take a photo of him and forward the photos to the police station. A first victim crossed paths with this 22-year-old man on Sunday morning as she was returning home. The attacker pursued him with an “Opinel” type knife while mentioning his Muslim religion.

A few minutes later, the man attacks other people. He demands money claiming to be a believer in Islam.

Recently converted to Islam

The police went to the scene and managed to find him thanks to the description of the victims and the report distributed on the basis of a photo taken by a witness to the incident.

A search is immediately carried out. At his aunt's home, where he lives, the police manage to establish that he recently converted, a month ago, to Islam. According to the first elements, he suffers from psychological disorders.

While in police custody, he saw a doctor who carried out a psychiatric examination, establishing that his state of health was compatible with a measure of police custody. The investigation continues.
