Foshan Port’s cargo throughput exceeded 100 million tons for the first time last year

Guangdong’s first inland river “100-million-ton port” was born

Nanfang Daily (Reporter/Liu Jialun) Guangdong’s first inland river “100-million-ton port” was born in Foshan.

The reporter learned from the Foshan Municipal Transportation Bureau on February 4 that in 2023, Foshan's total water transport turnover volume will be 17.245 billion ton-kilometers, a year-on-year increase of 21.9%, which is higher than the growth rate of the province. Foshan Port completed a cargo throughput of 102 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 19.2%, becoming the first "100-million-ton port" on an inland river in Guangdong.

Foshan is located in the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta. The Xijiang River, Beijiang River and their tributaries in the Pearl River water system run through the entire territory. Among them, the Xijiang River is the second largest shipping golden waterway in the country after the Yangtze River.

Sanshui Port will invest approximately 50 million yuan in 2023 to transform and build a new intelligent remote-controlled gantry crane, which can complete the hoisting of truck containers in only 3 minutes; Shunde New Port has fully implemented terminal informatization and automation, providing customers with 24-hour convenient customs clearance services. ; Gaohe Port terminal loading and unloading machinery, port trailers, etc. have become fully electric... In recent years, the Foshan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government have made overall arrangements to implement the three-year action of the comprehensive port reconstruction and improvement project and the special clean-up and rectification action of small scattered terminals to comprehensively improve Foshan Port Build development levels, create a modern port system, and promote high-quality development of inland shipping.

From the perspective of port cargo throughput, as early as 2021, Guangdong has 6 ports with over 100 million tons, namely Guangzhou Port, Shenzhen Port, Zhanjiang Port, Dongguan Port, Zhuhai Port, and Jiangmen Port. These 100-million-ton ports have one common characteristic: they are all coastal ports.

Foshan Port is the first inland river port in the province to enter the ranks of the 100-million-ton port, breaking the situation that all 100-billion-ton ports are from coastal ports. This is not only a historic new leap for Foshan's inland shipping, but also a world-wide contribution to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. level port group has injected new impetus.

In March 2022, the "Guangdong Province Port Layout Plan (2021-2035)" issued by the General Office of the Provincial Government proposed that by 2025, we will work with Hong Kong and Macao to basically build a world-class port group in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; by 2035, the entire province will Build a world-class port group that is safe, efficient, smart and green, has strong support, is innovative and open, and is internationally advanced.

Among them, Foshan Port has been given this positioning: Foshan Port is my country's main inland river port and an important hub of the Pearl River Delta comprehensive transportation system, and is the main container feeding port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Foshan Port mainly transports containers, energy, raw materials, industrial products, mining and construction materials, etc., taking into account both domestic and foreign trade. It has functions such as direct river-sea transportation and transportation organization and management, transit transshipment, modern logistics, and tourist passenger transportation.

Based on its positioning as a container feeding port, Foshan has vigorously promoted the innovation of "one port access" and "combined port" customs clearance models in the past two years to improve logistics efficiency and reduce corporate costs.

"One Port" and "Combined Port" have "moved" the international port to Foshan's "doorstep". Currently, there are 11 ports and terminals in Foshan city that implement intermodal transport with Shenzhen Shekou Port and Guangzhou Nansha Port. The logistics time for waterborne cargo has been shortened from 5-7 days to less than 2 days, and logistics efficiency has increased by more than 60%. In 2023, 320,200 standard containers will be imported and exported through the "One Port Connect" and "Combined Port", a year-on-year increase of 14.3%.

Gui Zhaozhi, deputy general manager of Shunde New Port, said that since the opening of the "combination port", Shunde New Port has realized the "two ports in one" of Shenzhen Shekou Port and Shunde New Port, and achieved "one declaration, one inspection and one release" between the two ports. It is more convenient, easier to clear customs, lower cost and more efficient, and is very popular among customers.

According to Lin Jiang, a professor at the Department of Economics, Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University, Foshan will be promoted to the fourth industrial city in the country in 2023, and Foshan will be approved as a "China Express Demonstration City". Foshan Port will be the first inland river port in the province to be promoted to a 100-million-ton port. Have mutually reinforcing internal logic. "The huge volume and growth of Foshan's manufacturing industry have created strong demand for the logistics industry; and a convenient and smooth comprehensive transportation system can improve logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, promote the flow and aggregation of various production factors, and provide manufacturing provide strong support for industrial development." Lin Jiang said.
