Today, Saturday, Turkey handed over the keys to newly completed homes to thousands of whose homes were destroyed after the devastating Kahramanmaraş earthquake that struck the south of the country in February 2023, a year after the worst disaster the country has witnessed in its modern history.

The strong earthquakes that occurred in southern Turkey killed more than 50,000 people in 11 provinces and displaced millions.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a ceremony in Hatay, the province most affected by the earthquakes, “Today, we hand over 7,275 homes in Hatay... We will gradually hand over 40,000 homes throughout the region once their construction is completed.”

Erdogan added that about 75,000 homes will be delivered over the next two months, adding that the government intends to hand over 200,000 homes in total this year.

Erdogan confirmed that studies carried out by the government showed that the number of people entitled to housing in the earthquake zone is 390,000.

Erdogan indicated that the government seeks to use the destruction caused by the earthquake as a means to ensure the order of cities and make them visionary.

In this context, Urban Development Minister Muhammad Oz Haseki told reporters - yesterday, Friday - that about 680,000 homes were destroyed in the earthquake area, adding that 390,000 families are registered to receive homes that will be built there.
