Difficult start: For issue 2/2024 of the magazine “test”, Stiftung Warentest examined Amazon televisions now available in Germany for the first time. The experts only certified that the company had a “mediocre debut”.

Amazon has been offering televisions in the USA for some time, and three models have been available in Germany since June 2023: the

Amazon Fire TV-2

, the

Amazon Fire TV-4

and the

Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED

.

All three devices are rated “satisfactory” by Stiftung Warentest: “Sometimes unnatural colors are annoying, sometimes details are lost in dark parts of the picture, sometimes it jerks in fast scenes or when the camera pans.” The sound is also relatively thin and the channel changes a bit sluggish. According to the testers, the screen menu is optimized for playing films and series from streaming services.

In the Stiftung Warentest test, the

Amazon Fire TV-4

performed best with an overall grade of 3.1. The model with a screen diagonal of 55 inches (approx. 140 centimeters) costs around 700 euros. With an overall grade of 3.2, the equally large

Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED,

which is the most expensive of the three Amazon televisions at around 800 euros, is rated only slightly worse. Both would consume a relatively large amount of electricity. This was also shown in the SPIEGEL test for the Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED with a size of 65 inches (approx. 165 centimeters).

With a price of around 350 euros and a screen diagonal of 40 inches (approx. 102 centimeters), the

Amazon Fire TV-2

is the cheapest Amazon TV device that Stiftung Warentest has tested. Unlike the other two models, its screen does not have UHD or 4K resolution. Instead, you have to make do with Full HD. None of the three devices offer a recording function. The verdict from Stiftung Warentest: There are significantly better TV sets at similar prices.

At least one problem that many users complained about when it was launched has apparently been resolved: advertising that fills the screen and cannot be closed. Stiftung Warentest reports that such large-scale advertising still appears occasionally, but can be minimized with one click. Amazon confirmed that this was subsequently changed.
