The department clarified that the authorities requested the purchase of 386 missiles of the corresponding model, equipment and logistical assistance.

“The proposed sale transaction will contribute to the implementation of US foreign policy objectives by strengthening the security of a NATO ally, which is an important political and economic force in Europe,” RIA Novosti quoted the Pentagon as saying.

The administration has already notified Congress of the decision. The deal may be blocked within 30 days.

Earlier, Chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ben Cardin approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey after Ankara's decision to ratify Sweden's accession to NATO.

The State Department also approved the possible sale of F-35 fighter jets to Greece.
