In 2023, the number and volume of blood donations in my country hit a new high. Medical staff showed their love to ensure blood supply during the Spring Festival.

According to the National Health Commission, in 2023, the national blood supply will be generally stable. There were 16.992 million voluntary blood donations throughout the year, and the blood donation volume reached 28.921 million units, an increase of 5.9% and 4.8% respectively compared with 2022. Both the number of blood donations and the volume of blood donations hit a record high.

The "2021 Global Blood Safety and Availability Status Report" released by the World Health Organization shows that my country ranks among the top in the world in terms of total voluntary blood donation, blood quality and safety level, and reasonable clinical blood use level.

Medical staff donate blood for free to ensure blood supply during the Spring Festival

Every winter is the off-season for blood donation. Medical staff in Beijing, Dalian and other places actively carry out voluntary blood donation activities to ensure blood supply during the Spring Festival.

At Peking Union Medical College Hospital, at 8 a.m., medical staff lined up waiting to donate blood. Tan Xianjie, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, donated 400 ml of blood this time, which is the largest amount of whole blood donated by a healthy adult in a single donation.

Tan Xianjie, deputy director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital:

Because I have type O blood. Type O blood is a universal transfusion and is relatively scarce, so I donated an extra 200 ml.

Sun Limeng, a teaching teacher in the Section 7 Ward of the International Medical Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital:

I spread my love and infect the people around me, because I donate blood every year to inspire my family, my sister and my wife, who go to the blood donation car with me to donate blood every year.

Gan Jia, executive deputy director of the Blood Transfusion Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital:

I have not donated too much. I have only donated 15 times. For most healthy adults, donating 200 or 400 ml of blood is safe and has no impact on the body. Our existing research shows that donating blood regularly reduces the risk of at least heart-related disease.

Recently, due to the cold weather and the prevalence of respiratory diseases, the number of people donating blood on the streets has dropped significantly. Medical institutions at all levels in Dalian, Liaoning Province, actively carry out free blood donation activities.

Guo Chengzhong, Chairman of the Union of Dalian Women and Children's Medical Center Hope Plaza Campus:

Everyone was very enthusiastic and active. In less than three days, a total of more than 350 people signed up in two batches.

Cardiac surgeon Gao Minglei has been donating blood voluntarily for 18 consecutive years, with a cumulative donation of nearly 20,000 ml.

Gao Minglei, deputy director of the Department of Circulation Medicine at the Children's Heart Center of Dalian Women and Children's Medical Center:

After personally performing various types of heart surgeries, I have become more deeply aware of the shortage and preciousness of clinical blood. I just thought about whether I could use my own way to contribute to these children and my cause of saving lives and helping the wounded in addition to my own job. (CCTV News Client)
