Nearly 300 people were injured in a large fire caused by a gas explosion on the night of Thursday February 1 to Friday February 2 in Nairobi, the Red Cross in Kenya said on Friday.

“The concerted actions of various intervention units resulted in the successful evacuation of 271 people to different health facilities in Nairobi,” the Red Cross said on X (ex-Twitter), adding that 27 other people were treated on site in Embakasi, a district of the capital.

Around 6:30 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m. GMT), many firefighters were still working to try to bring the fire under control, noted an AFP journalist. Large columns of black smoke still escape from the blaze.
