Looking at the disaster-stricken villages: "A constant worry"

That morning, the first stop of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s inspection was the Sixth Port Village in Xiqing District.

It is located in the west of Tianjin city and is surrounded by three rivers: Ziya River, Daqing River and Duliujia River. It is an important place for flood control. It is understood that the name of the Sixth Port Village was derived from flood prevention.

A long time ago, most residents in this area lived along the river. Later, when the Ziya River Embankment was being built, people from Liubao in the upper reaches were borrowed for support, so it was named Liubao, which means brother of Liubao. During the Qing Dynasty, this place was renamed Sixth Port, which is still in use today.

Last summer, a severe flood occurred in the Haihe River Basin. In early August, the Dongdian flood storage and detention area was put into emergency operation. A total of 179 people were relocated and resettled in Liubu Village, and 10,400 acres of flooded land, including 2,022 greenhouses.

After the flood, Liubu Village promptly formed a party member service team, completed drainage in less than 10 days, and stepped up efforts to repair the damaged farmland and agricultural facilities. At present, the whole village has replanted 1,223.2 acres of winter wheat, 1,200 acres of vegetables, and repaired more than 1,600 sheds.

In Liubu Village, the General Secretary learned on the spot about the recovery of local agricultural production after last year's floods and visited the affected people.

In the greenhouses of Liubu Village, crops of vegetables and fruits are waiting to be picked and transported. Some have been packaged and will be sent to the city to be served on people's tables. This village, known as the "No. 1 Vegetable Village in Beijing and Tianjin", will provide important supplies of agricultural products to megacities during the Spring Festival.

This is the third time that the General Secretary has visited the disaster-stricken areas since September last year to express condolences.

At the end of July and early August last year, extreme rainfall occurred in North China, Huanghuai and other places, causing floods and geological disasters. The General Secretary has always been concerned about flood prevention, flood relief, and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.

On September 7, during his inspection tour in Heilongjiang, the General Secretary went to Longwangmiao Village, Laojieji Township, Shangzhi City, Harbin, which was severely affected by the disaster, to visit and express condolences to the victims.

On November 10, as winter entered in the north, the General Secretary visited Mentougou in Beijing and Zhuozhou in Hebei Province to learn about the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction situation on the spot. He emphasized that it is necessary to ensure that the broad masses of the people live and work in peace and contentment and have a warm winter.

In his New Year's message delivered a month ago, the General Secretary mentioned some things that are "concerning", including the occurrence of natural disasters such as floods, typhoons, and earthquakes in some places.

As the Spring Festival approaches, the General Secretary made a special trip to Tianjin Liubu Village. "I have always been thinking about the people in the disaster area." This is the concern that the General Secretary always worries about.

Look at the ancient cultural street: "Strive to continue the Chinese cultural context"

On the afternoon of February 1, the second stop of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s inspection that day was Tianjin Ancient Culture Street.

Ancient Culture Street is the birthplace of Tianjin Wei and the earliest economic, cultural and commercial gathering place in Tianjin, condensing the folk customs and history of Tianjin.

Tianjin Ancient Culture Street is located on the northeast side of the old city of Tianjin and on the west bank of the Haihe River. After two large-scale renovations and reconstructions in 1985 and 2002, the street has a large number of cultural landscapes, historical landscapes and unique folk customs, including 18th Street Mahua and clay figurines. Zhang, Musical Instrument Zhang, Yangliuqing Painting, Darentang and a number of time-honored shops.

As the Spring Festival approaches, Tianjin Ancient Culture Street is filled with red lanterns, and dragon and lion dance performances take place on the streets. It is full of Chinese, Tianjin, ancient, cultural and New Year flavors, and there is an endless stream of citizens and tourists coming to buy.

In Ancient Culture Street, the General Secretary inspected the supply situation of the festival market. This is also an important focus of the General Secretary’s inspections on the eve of the Spring Festival in previous years. He has repeatedly emphasized the need to ensure adequate market supply and safe and reliable quality during the festival, so that the masses can have a stable and peaceful Spring Festival.

As a famous historical and cultural city, Tianjin retains a large number of unique modern architectural groups and historical and cultural blocks.

It is worth mentioning that the last time the General Secretary visited Tianjin, he made a special trip to visit Liang Qichao’s former residence on Minzu Road, Hebei District. He listened to the introduction of the protection situation of Tianjin's historical and cultural blocks in conjunction with the exhibition boards. He pointed out that we should cherish the city's historical and cultural heritage, develop while protecting, and protect while developing.

This time at Tianjin Ancient Culture Street, the General Secretary inspected the protection and utilization of historical and cultural blocks.

Protecting traditional neighborhoods, protecting ancient buildings, and protecting cultural relics means preserving the history and context of the city.

Last year, when the General Secretary gave important instructions on publicity, ideological and cultural work, he clearly stated "seven focuses", one of which is "focus on continuing the Chinese cultural context and promoting the creative transformation and innovative development of China's excellent traditional culture."

The General Secretary’s visit to Tianjin Ancient Culture Street this time is another declaration of efforts to continue the Chinese cultural heritage.

The inspection at a special time node shows warmth and deep meaning

"Current Affairs News Eye" found that this trip to Tianjin was the 12th time that Xi Jinping visited grassroots cadres and the masses on the eve of the Spring Festival since he became general secretary.

Every Spring Festival eve, the General Secretary will visit the grassroots, ask about the welfare, listen to the people's voices, and send blessings. Last year, the General Secretary visited and expressed condolences to grassroots cadres and the masses via video link.

February 1st is the 22nd day of the twelfth lunar month, the day before the Little New Year in the north. This is also the third time since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China that the General Secretary has visited the grassroots on this day before the Spring Festival. The general secretary went to Gansu in 2013 and Guizhou in 2021, both on the 22nd day of the twelfth lunar month.

The first stop of the General Secretary's trip to Tianjin was to visit the people affected by the disaster in Liubu Village. In January 2022, when the General Secretary went to Shanxi to visit grassroots cadres and masses, his first stop was also a disaster-stricken village. The previous year, Shanxi experienced the strongest autumn floods since meteorological records began. Farm houses in Fengnanyuan Village, Huozhou City were severely damaged. The General Secretary made a special trip to the village to visit and express condolences.

The General Secretary’s visit to Tianjin this time is also his third inspection trip to Tianjin since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

In May 2013, the General Secretary visited Tianjin for the first time. During his inspection, he proposed to write a "Two Cities Tale" of Beijing and Tianjin for socialist modernization in the new era. The following year, the General Secretary made a major plan to elevate "Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development" to a national strategy.

In January 2019, the General Secretary came to Tianjin again during his inspection tour of the three provinces and cities of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. From Nankai campus and urban communities to ports and science and technology parks, the General Secretary conducted on-the-spot investigations. At the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development symposium hosted during the inspection, the General Secretary put forward clear requirements in six aspects for promoting the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei.

In May last year, the General Secretary presided over a symposium on in-depth promotion of the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei in Hebei. He pointed out that efforts should be made to make Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei a pioneer and demonstration area for Chinese-style modernization. The general secretary once again emphasized at the meeting that the "Tale of Two Cities" of Beijing and Tianjin must be well sung.

Tianjin Wei is at the foot of Jiuhe River, and the hometown of Jinmen is so prosperous.

After five years, when he goes to Tianjin again, what clear requirements will General Secretary Xi Jinping make and what important messages will he convey? "Current Affairs News Eye" will continue to pay attention.
