The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, called on the European Union to "suspend" its economic agreement with Israel following the International Court of Justice's recognition of the risk of Tel Aviv committing "genocide" in the Gaza Strip.

Albanese said on the “X” platform on Friday, “The European Union is Israel’s largest trading partner, representing 30% of its merchandise trade.”

She explained that Article Two of the economic agreement between the European Union and Israel stipulates “respect for human rights.”

She added that the International Court of Justice's recognition of the risk of Israel committing "genocide" in the Gaza Strip "obliges the European Union to suspend the agreement."

The UN rapporteur attached to the post a link to the details of the agreement on the website of the European Commission of the Union, which entered into force in June 2000.

On January 26, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide against Palestinians and improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

On January 11 and 12, the International Court of Justice in The Hague held two public hearings, as part of the start of consideration of the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel on charges of committing “genocide crimes” against the Palestinians in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which as of Friday left 27,131 martyrs and 66,287 injured, most of them children and women, according to the Palestinian authorities, and caused massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, according to the United Nations.
