The extension construction for the Bundestag's Marie-Elisabeth Lüders House, which began in 2010, is becoming more expensive again. This was confirmed to SPIEGEL from parliamentary circles after a meeting of the responsible building commission this week. The costs are now expected to amount to 395 million euros, another 30 million euros more than last estimated. The reason given is, among other things, rising prices for building materials.

When construction began, total expenditure was assumed to be 190 million euros. Completion was significantly delayed due to construction defects. The handover of the extension is now planned for the fourth quarter of 2024. The additional space will be used for parliamentary offices and administration.

There had been repeated problems with the construction site: at one point there was even a threat that the extension would be demolished.

The former US embassy in the GDR, another building that is currently being prepared for the Bundestag, will be significantly more expensive. According to information from Parliament's building commission, the costs for the extensive renovation of the building on Neustädtische Kirchstrasse in Berlin are expected to amount to around 98 million euros - 40 million euros more than previously estimated.

According to the information, the background is expenditure that is necessary to meet high monument protection requirements. The building is scheduled to be handed over to the Bundestag in 2027 and used by its administration.
