The 10th Pacific Island Summit, which brings together Japan and the South Pacific island nations, will be held in Tokyo for three days starting July 16th this year.

The Pacific Island Summit is an international conference held once every three years, inviting the leaders of countries and regions in the South Pacific to Japan.

The government decided on the 2nd to hold its 10th cabinet meeting in Tokyo for three days from July 16th to 18th this year.

The last meeting three years ago was held in a video conference format due to the novel coronavirus, so this is the first time in six years that it has been held face-to-face.

At a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi said, ``Pacific island countries are long-standing friends with deep historical ties,'' and, with China and other countries increasing their maritime expansion in mind, ``As the foundations of the international order are shaken, "This is an important opportunity to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law and to expand the circle of cooperation."

``While supporting regional unity and the efforts of the Pacific island countries themselves, I would like to discuss common issues such as climate change and demonstrate concrete ways of cooperation.''
