Among the numerous announcements unveiled by Gabriel Attal this Thursday to respond to the anger of farmers, the Prime Minister expressed his desire to include the objective of food sovereignty in the law. It must be said that France depends more and more on foreign countries.

This is a point that Gabriel Attal took time to develop this Thursday. The Prime Minister, who presented the government's new measures intended to respond to the anger of farmers, mentioned the principle of food sovereignty which he wants to be included in the law. The government has even made it an emergency given France's dependence on food. 

Cherry production halved in the space of a year

For example, one in two chickens consumed in France is imported.

The French eat French poultry when they are at home, but as soon as they go to a restaurant or a canteen, the chicken served is often Belgian, Polish, or even Ukrainian. Another example: temperate and fresh fruits and vegetables, which therefore do not include tropical fruits and citrus fruits. In this area, France today imports a third of what it consumes.

In France, the area devoted to pear production was halved between 2017 and 2021. Halving also for cherries, but in just one year. The ban on an insecticide explains, among other things, this negative dynamic. Finally, the example of milk is also striking since the sector is warning of an imminent loss of sovereignty, by 2027.
