Extraordinary EU summit: Ukraine's expectations

In Ukraine, while Russian drone and missile attacks continue daily, a European meeting will be closely followed from kyiv this Thursday, February 1: after several months of blockage caused by Viktor Orban's Hungary, European leaders will meet in Brussels to try again to agree on a new tranche of aid granted to Ukraine.

Ukraine has its eyes on Brussels as European Union leaders meet for an extraordinary summit to try, once again, to unlock a 50 billion euro package that Hungary had opposed last December.

Ahead of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, among others, reiterated their solidarity with kyiv and warned that Europe had not yet fulfilled its promises, particularly regarding the delivery of munitions.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, affirms that this special envelope would be granted with or without the approval of Hungary, the aim being to allow Ukraine to fill its budget deficit, but also to equip itself over the next four years on the military aspect in order to ensure its air and land defense against Russian aggression.

This is precisely what kyiv expects from the European Union - and if on the eve of this summit, Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Ukrainian gratitude towards its Western neighbors, given the uncertainty of recent months about the future aid from Brussels and Washington, Kiev is also banking on the development of bilateral agreements.
