Venezuela: excluded from the presidential election, Maria Corina Machado insists on the necessary negotiation with power

Banned from the presidential election, the opposition candidate in Venezuela, Maria Corina Machado, took the floor Monday evening to say all the bad things she thought of the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice. But the opposition’s “Unity Platform” does not seem to have a plan B.

They cannot hold an election without me and without the millions of Venezuelans who voted!

Maria Corina Machado does not admit defeat despite last week's decision. According to

the Supreme Court of Justice

, the opposition candidate, united within the “Unity Platform”, cannot stand in an election until 2036. Exit therefore the presidential election of this year, whose date precise is still unknown. In the

agreement signed by the government and the opposition last October

, known as Barbados, the second half of 2024 was discussed.

But the speech was nevertheless conquering Monday evening, during his press conference, reports our correspondent in Caracas,

Alice Campaignole

. And Maria Corina Machado did not mince her words: “

The judgment they rendered is not worthy of being called a legal decision, it is not even an arbitrary decision. No. This is judicial delinquency! »

No plan B except to negotiate with Maduro

If the decision was expected, justice being dependent on power, no one hoped that the candidate would finally be authorized to participate in the next election, what could be surprising yesterday was the absence of alternative proposals.

One option would be, for example, to nominate one or another opposition candidate to run in her place. No instructions for his supporters either, a call to demonstrate for example. For Maria Corina Machado the solution must be negotiation with the power in place. Negotiations to try to normalize Venezuelan political life which have now lasted for several years.
