South-West Cameroon: separatist attack in Buea leaves at least one dead

The night was turbulent in Buea, the capital city of the South-West, one of the two English-speaking regions of

Cameroon 

: a small group of separatist fighters burst in on the night of January 29 and 30, 2024. The insurgents s They attacked civilians before melting into the night, not without causing casualties and material damage.

According to sources, in Buea, the small group of attackers burst into the city around 10 p.m. They targeted the area around the large market located not far from the Molyko stadium, where a few businesses were still open. Bernard Okalia Bilai, the governor of the region, who confirmed this information to RFI, specifies that the attackers had “ 

weapons of war

 ”. They fired without warning on the population, killing at least one person and injuring others before disappearing into the wild, adds the same source.

The attackers also set fire to cars parked there. At least five vehicles burned.

The attack, according to local residents, lasted barely 10 minutes, enough time to plunge the city of Buea, so often the victim of attacks by English-speaking separatists, into turmoil.

Failure to respect the “dead city” instruction imposed by the separatists in question

Their crime finished, this commando broadcast videos of their incursion on social networks. We can see some members of the group stating in Pidgin language what could be the motive for this attack. Namely, non-compliance with the “dead city” instruction imposed by the separatists every Monday in the two English-speaking regions in crisis.

An official on site testifies to the fact that the populations are putting up more and more resistance to this slogan of a ghost town, like yesterday when the city experienced the excitement of ordinary days.

This morning, the governor of the region indicates that the situation has returned to normal and that people are going about their business.
