Pakistan: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan sentenced to ten years in prison

In Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were sentenced to ten years in prison for leaking classified documents. The trial took place in prison, but the media had very limited access to cover it. The conclusions were delivered this Tuesday, January 30 and the verdict was announced a few hours later.

Justice has convicted

Imran Khan

, the former Prime Minister and former Foreign Minister, for making public a secret document known as CIPHER - Imran Khan, had used this diplomatic cable to publicly accuse the US government of having worked in favor of his ouster from power because he did not follow the United States line on the Ukrainian issue, among other things. 

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party called the court case a "sham" and announced it would challenge the verdict in the Islamabad High Court. 

Imran Khan has been in jail since August 8, 2023, five months ago, when

he was first sentenced to three years in prison

in a corruption case. A few weeks later, his sentence was suspended by the High Court, but his detention was continued because he is accused in several other cases.

The verdict delivered on Tuesday comes just nine days before the legislative elections in Pakistan. Elections in which

the PTI, Imran Khan's party cannot participate under this banner

.

A sanction decision from the Independent Electoral Commission which ruled that the movement had not respected the deadlines for holding internal party elections. PTI candidates will participate in the legislative elections on February 8 without a label. Imran Khan denounces unfair elections.
