Haiti: general strike to force Prime Minister Ariel Henry to restore security

One person was killed, several others were injured, Monday January 29 in Haiti, on the first day of a general strike which is scheduled to last until Wednesday inclusive. The strike was launched at the call of several trade union organizations, to force Prime Minister Ariel Henry to restore peace and security in Haiti, and free the country's roads from armed gangs.

This Monday, commercial activities operated slowly in Haiti, and many educational establishments remained closed. Most residents have not left their homes, including in the capital Port-au-Prince. 

It must be said that tension was high in several cities across the country: in Les Cayes, demonstrators heading towards the airport were dispersed by the police, who fired automatic weapons and threw tear gas.

In the department of Grand'Anse, demonstrators erected barricades in the town of Roseaux, demanding the departure of the Prime Minister; and a demonstrator was shot and killed when, according to witnesses, police fired into the crowd.

Other barricades in several towns in the North-East department, including Ouanaminthe, where heavy gunfire was also heard in the morning. 

Finally, in Cap-Haïtien, former senator Jean-Charles Moïse, in front of several thousand demonstrators, renewed his calls for insurrection, calling on Haitians to " 

destroy the country to force Ariel Henry to leave power 

."

According to his opponents, the Prime Minister must leave power on February 7, according to an agreement he signed with several political parties a little over a year ago.
