China and the United States resume talks on fentanyl

It is the leading cause of death among 18-45 year olds in the United States: fentanyl, 50 times more powerful than heroin, is one of the main drugs responsible for the opioid crisis which has been raging for several years in the country. There are around a hundred thousand deaths from overdoses every year. To combat fentanyl, the American and Chinese governments continue their discussions, because the components of this synthetic drug are exported from China.

A US delegation led by Deputy Homeland Security Advisor Jen Daskal was received at the Diaoyutai compound in Beijing, where foreign officials are hosted, by Wang Xiaohong, China's Minister of Public Security. With just a few chemicals, fentanyl can be manufactured endlessly, and these ingredients come straight from China. They are imported illegally by Mexican cartels, who then mass manufacture fentanyl in their laboratory, before selling it in different forms, often in M30 branded pills or powder, in the United States.

To combat this epidemic of overdoses which is worsening in the country, the American government began discussions with China a few months ago, to try to limit these illegal exports and thus reduce the influx of raw materials into the cartel laboratories.

The Chinese and American presidents reached an agreement. It led to the creation of a bilateral anti-narcotics working group.

For the moment, Beijing has closed a company and claims to have strengthened its monitoring of substances linked to fentanyl. But Washington wants more, while China accuses it of being too lax in its fight against narcotics. Both sides pass the buck, and fentanyl continues to kill one person every seven minutes in the United States.
