  • Education The State School Council approves a proposal to ban cell phones in all schools and limit them in high schools

  • Generalitat Catalonia studies banning cell phones in classrooms

Catalonia will start the next school year with restrictions on the

use of mobile phones

.

Primary Education

students

(

ages 6 to 12) will not be able to bring

phones

to classrooms, while in

Secondary Education (ages 12 to 16) their use will be limited:

they

must be turned off except when teachers allow it to carry out academic activities.

The Generalitat has today approved the rule that regulates the use of

smartphones

in all centers, which until now acted autonomously. It is estimated that half of them had already implemented protocols for the use of the terminals and a quarter had vetoed it. In the press conference after the weekly meeting of the Government, the Minister of Education,

Anna Simó

, reported that the instructions have been sent to all educational centers, which must now communicate how they will deploy them starting in the 2024 academic year. 25.

The decision comes after, last December, the

Education Council of Catalonia

(higher advisory body of the Department of Education) approved a document in which, after more than thirty debates with all the agents involved, it was decided to restrict the use of

mobile phones

. The report recommended that

Primary be "a

mobile

-free stage

" and that there be more restrictions in

ESO than in

post-compulsory

education

(

Baccalaureate

and

Vocational Training

). In this stage after Secondary School, free use of the

mobile phone

will not be possible

during school hours, but it will be possible outside of school hours following the center's rules.

Along the same lines, last Thursday, the

State School Council

unanimously

approved a recommendation to prohibit

cell phones in all

Infant

and

Primary

classes

and apply restrictions in

schools

for

ESO

students

. Several autonomous communities have implemented measures in this regard in recent months.
