Kai Wegner appoints Katharina Günther-Wünsch as Senator for Education (in April 2023)

New information about attending two football games together raises doubts about the claim that the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, has only been in a relationship with the Senator for Education, Katharina Günther-Wünsch (both CDU), since autumn 2023. On Saturday it became known that the current couple drove to two 1. FC Union games in May - in Wegner's company limousine. In response to a SPIEGEL inquiry, the Senate Chancellery confirmed that the senator accompanied the mayor privately at the time. The information was therefore not based on a logbook, but on Wegner's personal memories.
Günther-Wünsch traveled in Wegner's limousine on two other occasions: to “Garden Day” on June 9th and to a hit festival in Oranienburg. According to the education administration, Günther-Wünsch was personally invited to these events. It is unclear why the Senator for Education went with Wegner to “Garden Day” – Senator for Transport Manja Schreiner (CDU) and Senator for Construction Christian Gaebler (SPD) were also present at the festival. However, the Senate administration had announced that Günther-Wünsch was the only senator who ever rode in Wegner's official limousine.
At the beginning of January, Kai Wegner announced through a lawyer that he and Günther-Wünsch had decided to enter into a relationship in the fall of 2023. However, it is often heard in the CDU environment that the relationship may have existed for a long time. Wegner was elected as the new Governing Mayor by the Berlin House of Representatives at the end of April and subsequently appointed Günther-Wünsch as the new Senator for Education.
