UNESCO has published a first report on the sector entitled “The fashion sector in Africa: trends, challenges and growth opportunities”. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization believes that the fashion industry is expected to gain momentum in the coming years, provided certain challenges are met. It depicts the potential for job creation, development investment and global recognition, not only for fashion designers, but also for the local tailors, artisans and entrepreneurs they use. According to the institution, clothing would be the second most important sector behind agriculture: with a net worth estimated at 31 billion dollars (around 29.3 billion euros) in 2020, the clothing market and of footwear in sub-Saharan Africa remains largely under-exploited.

In its report, UNESCO, however, highlights four challenges facing governments and decision-makers to realize the potential of the fashion sector in Africa: strengthening the legal protection of designers and professionals, investing in small and medium-sized businesses, establishing environmental standards exemplary, and improve the transmission of know-how and training.
