A man

in his 30s

was shot dead by police on Tuesday after trying to enter a building in south London, allegedly armed with a crossbow.

The London Metropolitan Police (Met), also known as Scotland Yard, explained that they responded to a call

at 04:55

GMT today from neighbors who claimed that the subject was trying to force their way into the home in the

Southwark

neighborhood. .

"The man, believed to be in his 30s, was reported to be carrying several weapons, including a crossbow, and was threatening to

attack residents

of the home," the Met said in a statement.

Scotland Yard said a group of unarmed officers

attempted to speak to the suspect

but, after receiving threats, they turned to armed colleagues, who shot him when he forced entry.

London police said the suspect, whose identity and motivation are still unknown,

was given first aid

but died at the scene.
