Laundry detergent is an essential product in our daily lives. But with the proliferation of brands and types of detergent, it becomes difficult to navigate. 60 million consumers conducted a survey on around thirty brands and while some should be favored, others should be avoided.

The French have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to choose a good detergent. Today, there are them at all prices, in liquid, in pods, specialized for white or colors. To help us make our choice, the

60 million consumers

association conducted a survey, published in April 2023. For this, it selected a panel of 30 brands, the most used on the market, and tested them on three criteria: effectiveness, impact on textiles and health. The study highlighted the presence of certain toxic substances.

Liquid detergents, more likely to contain toxic products

Even though they are the most appreciated for their effectiveness and their good smell, liquid detergents obtain the lowest marks. Four brands are concerned: “Omo, natural essences, roses and white lilac”; “Parsley with Marseille soap, bouquet of Provence”; “Xtra 3 in 1, Marseille soap” and “Ariel power Alpine”. They are all classified in category E, the lowest.

Some detergents are considered harmful due to the presence of certain chemical agents in the composition of the liquids, such as irritant and toxic enzymes, thiazolinones, sodium laureth sulfate and many other elements that can harm health. However, not all liquid detergents are affected. The best ranked product is “Bioactive Green House”, with a B obtained for health and C for environment, and an overall score of 14/20.

The detergents in pods to favor

Compared to liquid detergents,

60 million consumers

recommend using detergents in pods. These products are considered healthier because they contain little or no harmful preservatives. In addition, they ensure that the necessary quantity is used, which is beneficial for the environment, but also for the wallet.

This is the reason why detergents in pods are rated well above average, with a special mention for "Xéor", from the distributor brand of E.Leclerc which obtains a score of 15/20.
