The shooting at the Ribnikar school in Belgrade in May 2023 caused 10 deaths and 7 injuries, but the killer, a 13-year-old student, having not reached the criminal age, will not be tried. On the other hand, the trial of 4 adults, including the author's parents, opened today in Belgrade.
The father of the shooter is accused of aggravated endangerment of security and faces 12 years in prison. He legally possessed the weapons used in the shooting, but apparently had not stored them in a safe as required by law. He also reportedly took his son to a shooting club to show him how the gun worked.
The mother of the shooter, whose DNA was found on a cartridge case, is accused of illegal possession of ammunition and risks 2 years in prison.
The other two people on the stand, the owner and instructor of a shooting club, are accused of perjury and face three years in prison.
Although the accused are adults, the court decided to impose the closed session, to protect the minor witnesses expected to take the stand. A decision regretted by the defense. The trial will continue tomorrow.
