Regional and Western reactions followed the killing of 3 American soldiers and the wounding of dozens of them in a drone attack in northeastern Jordan, amid calls to calm tensions.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib said in statements to state television on Monday that the parties of the “axis of resistance” are responding to those he described as American aggressors according to their discretion.

At the same time, Iran's mission to the United Nations denied - today, Monday, in a statement - any role for Tehran in yesterday's attack, which also led to the injury of at least 34 American soldiers.

On the other hand, the Iraqi government expressed its denunciation and concern about the "dangerous" security developments in the region, and declared its readiness to determine basic rules to prevent the expansion of the conflict.

Government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi said - in a statement - that Baghdad "denounces the ongoing escalation, especially the recent attack that occurred on the Syrian-Jordanian border."

He continued, "At a time when Iraq calls for an end to the spiral of violence, it confirms its readiness to work on drawing up basic rules of engagement to avoid further repercussions in the region."

In Western reactions, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in statements to television stations, "We are concerned, and we will urge Iran to seek to calm tensions in the region."

He continued, "We stand strongly with our allies to achieve stability and peace in the region, which is what we continue to work for." He stressed that Britain strongly condemns the Jordanian attack.

For its part, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its strong condemnation of the attack, and said in a statement that such attacks “threaten the stability of the entire region, and the perpetrators of the crimes must be held accountable for their actions.”

American forces in the Middle East are being subjected to escalating attacks with missiles and drones against the backdrop of the United States’ support for Israel in its war on Gaza.

The Jordan attack is the first targeting that has left American forces dead since the start of the war on Gaza last October, and Western reports have described it as a dangerous regional escalation.
