"Decisive step in the fight against gang violence" and "more effective crime fighting". These are arguments used by both politicians and the police to justify the increased surveillance.

The government wants to quintuple the number of surveillance cameras in the country this year. In Stockholm County, they are to be increased from 320 to 800 and the police hope to get the go-ahead to use technical analysis tools such as facial recognition in real time.

Personal integrity

But star lawyer Thomas Olsson sees risks with the implemented and planned measures.

- Each thing individually can appear as a minor interference in personal integrity, but seen as a whole, the implemented and proposed measures provide opportunities for the state to map an individual's life in the smallest detail, he says.
