Guinea qualified for the rest of the African Cup of Nations, Sunday January 28, by beating Equatorial Guinea (1-0) thanks to a goal scored in the last seconds before the final whistle. The Guineans, who dream of repeating their feat of 1976 when they finished 2nd in the competition, will play in the quarter-final against DR Congo.

The Leopards, for their part, qualified for the quarter-finals of CAN 2024 by eliminating Egypt (1-1, 8 tab to 7) after penalties which saw goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi supplant the Egyptian specialist Gabaski in the role of the hero. It is thanks to the goalkeeper from Rodez (French League 2) that DR Congo will challenge Guinea on February 3: he managed the last shot just after his counterpart sent his over the bar.

The two matches in the round of 16 on Monday will pit Cape Verde against Mauritania and Senegal against Ivory Coast. Passed as the last survivors in the round of 16, the Elephants are counting on the energy of the survivors to overthrow the Lions of Teranga, title holders and qualified without trembling, Monday in Yamoussoukro.
