• Album The Best Images of the Proclamation of Frederick X of Denmark

And Frederick and Mary kissed. It was a handover of the throne, a proclamation, not a wedding, but Denmark's new kings felt compelled to kiss on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, the seat of parliament, before the huge cheering crowd. Perhaps infected by the euphoria that, despite the coldness of the day, was in the air. Perhaps to put an end to the gossip about the strange meeting in Madrid last autumn between the then crown prince and the Mexicansocialist Genoveva Casanova.

Mary appeared on the balcony after her husband was proclaimed king by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and gave a short speech in which he praised his mother, Margrethe II, and announced his intentions for the future. Dressed as a rear admiral, she was dressed in white, they looked into each other's eyes, smiling, and held hands, before their four sons also came out to say hello. The message seemed clear: the united family will never be defeated.

As at their wedding two decades ago, Frederick X seemed even more excited than Mary. His eyes reddened, he stood alone on the balcony after his family went back inside. He first put his right hand to his heart, as a sign of gratitude for the ovations, and then also his left. He went inside, but the clamor didn't stop and the whole family came out again. The two boys, heir Christian and Vincent, in suits. Isabella, in red. Josephine, in navy blue.

The four princes went back inside and left their parents alone, who continued to smile, look into each other's eyes, and wave. And then came the historic kiss.

On the part of the family of the new queen, Australian by birth, only her older sister, Jane, came to the coronation. Her father, 82-year-old John Donaldson, and her two other siblings, Patricia and John, did not travel to Denmark. Mary's mother, Etta, died in 1997 after heart surgery.

Frederick X of Denmark: scandals and girlfriends not to mention Mary and Genevieve

In the chapter of absences, the most talked about - Meghan Markle-style sit-in?' - has been that of Princess Marie, wife of Joachim, Frederick's younger brother. As a possible cause, the ill-thought-out point to the family quarrel that arose in 2022 when Margaret withdrew the titles of princes and princesses from Joachim's four children (two with Alejandra, his first wife, and two with Marie), who are now counts and countesses.

The well-intentioned, on the other hand, recall that Marie and Joachim spent Christmas Eve with the Queen, Frederick and Mary at Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus, as well as that Margaret did not communicate her decision to the family until December 28. Given that Joaquin and Marie now live in Washington, where he is a military attaché at the Danish Embassy, another trip back and forth from the United States in such a short time, and unforeseen ones, would have been quite inconvenient.

The most plausible explanation, however, would be simpler. According to Danish experts in the Royal House such as Kim Bach, Frederick's proclamation (officially called tronskifte, change of throne) is not a family event, like a wedding or a christening, but exclusively a matter of state, so the protocol only contemplates the presence of the new monarch's closest relatives.

"This is an act that marks a change in the head of state and has no direct relationship with the royal family," Bach explains. "Joaquin's children and his wife don't paint anything there."

Genoveva Casanova has not appeared in the Danish capital either, ignoring the invitation that the tabloid Ekstra Bladet, which defines itself as a republican, claims to have sent her. "Dear Genoveva Casanova," the text read. "Despite being good friends with our crown prince, we've had a hard time getting in touch with you lately. We'd just like to make sure you've heard the big news: on Sunday, Frederick will be crowned King of Denmark. What news, huh? If your friend hasn't invited you to the big event yet, we want the opportunity to do so. Genevieve, come to Copenhagen!"
